As I became more successful, my magazine dreams faded.
Mridu Khullar Relph – 30 Days, 30 Queries
My first year of ed writing was marked by a large list of publications that I dreamed of working for. These publications were my inspiration when I was feeling down or defeated. I’d read through the pages, I’d sit with a cup of tea in my hand and spend hours looking through their websites. I’d come up with dozens of ideas and pitch, pitch, pitch the hell out of them. I wrote for others, not just for them.
As I became more successful, and was more involved in work, my magazine dreams kind of vanished. I had credentials now, so I didn’t need to chase these publications like I had when I was new. It was hard to pitch new markets because I was so busy writing for existing clients.-To-Break-It was not something I wanted to do, but it did make me consider National Geographic or The New Yorker. Give The New Yorker a pitch and wait for the rejection.-You can mail your editor at a trade magazine to get a quick assignment, and a nice check within a month. I chose the latter option because hey, this is my profession and I’ve got to make money at it.
But it’s also my dream.
That’s how my personal 30 Days, 30 Queries Last year’s challenge saw incredible results.
I have four new clients total 30 I’d pitched. Two of the markets were $1 per word and have since become regulars. I received $5,000+ of work from them in the last quarter 2013. I was contacted by six editors from Oprah, Parents, Wired, and Parents asking me to continue sending ideas. I now have a good relationship with them. Eight others also sent me personal rejections which I took to mean that they were open to receiving more pitches.
Now I’m ready to help you achieve the same results and that’s why I’ve decided to launch the 30 Days, 30 Queries e-course.
Here’s what you get when you take the e-course:
1. 30 Lessons delivered to your email-Mail daily. This will guide you step-by-step on how to send 30 In a month, you can send out query letters. I’ll also share tips with you on the best ways to write effective pitches that get more assignments and more money.
2. You have lifetime access to the 30 Days, 30 Queries Facebook group that will consist of all participants—current and former—of this e-course. This is where you will interact with other writers taking the challenge. You can get support, cheer each others on, and share your goals. I will be available to answer your questions and guide you through the challenge.
3. A list of high-quality query letters and dozens of sample queries.-Paying markets and links to resources that make marketing simple and efficient.
Where most writers will fall down when it comes to pitching is this: They don’t pitch enough and they don’t pitch effectively. In this course, I’m going to teach you to do both and I’m going to provide you with the support, motivation, and kicks up the ass that force you to get up, take action, and work with the numbers that produce real results.
The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and LA Times accepted students of the course.
